WORLD BICYCLE DAY

WORLD BICYCLE DAY

It's World Bicycle Day, today!

In a city where congestion, rising fuel costs, and air pollution threaten public health and productivity, bicycles offer a powerful solution. For thousands of Harare residents, cycling isn’t just recreation—it’s daily transport, especially in high-density areas where access to formal transit is limited. Bicycles are affordable, non-polluting, space-efficient, and offer critical independence and mobility for everyone. Policies in cities that support uptake of bicycles are pro-poor.

Yet, despite their benefits, people on bicycles remain invisible in city planning. Dangerous roads, lack of safe lanes, and speeding traffic put lives at risk every day.

Join #HarareBikeDay — Saturday 7 June!

This Saturday, we reclaim the streets for people—not cars. #HarareBikeDay is a citywide celebration of active transport and clean mobility, hosted at Town House on #HarareOpenStreets—a section of the CBD closed to vehicular traffic for the day.

Social rides will start from multiple neighbourhoods and converge downtown in a collective call for #SafeRoadsForAll. Whether you’re a daily commuter, weekend cyclist, or just curious—come ride, connect, and help shape a more liveable, inclusive Harare.

Let’s pedal for safety, dignity, and freedom of movement.

The City of Harare Traffic and Transportation Department -together with support from the City of Munich, GIZ, the Active Mobility Stakeholder Group, and the Embassy of the Royal Netherlands - is inviting citizens, organisations and businesses in Harare to actively commit to road safety, sustainable transportation, and reducing carbon emissions for the betterment of society and the environment. Advocacy and awareness are crucial tools to achieve these goals.

Everyone, everywhere, is invited to participate in the four 2025 events hosted by the City of Harare: #HarareOpenStreets and World Bicycle Day #HarareBikeDay.

These are free events where the streets are closed to cars, so that people can walk, cycle, roll, dance or socialise in public space (usually roads) to experience places without cars.

The first event is set for Saturday, 1 March 2025 in Newlands, Harare! See the e-Flyer attached.
